Dear neighbor,

As you know, we completed the 2007 Nevada State Legislature and the 42 Assembly representatives and 21 Senators have returned home to their regular jobs.

I’ve resumed my position as a Battalion Chief with the fire department. I also serve on a number of interim committees which study issues in depth between our legislative sessions and recommend legislative changes for consideration. In the interim, I am serving on the Committee to Consult with the Director; the Legislative Commission's Subcommittee to Review Regulations; the Transportation Issues; the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security; and the Nevada Commission on Sports.

As the Assembly Majority Leader during the legislative session, my job was to work with Speaker Barbara Buckley and our leadership team to keep the process moving, make certain the key issues were addressed, and hammer out agreements to get necessary legislation passed.

In addition, I worked on my own legislative measures. I am proud to be the prime sponsor of the following new laws to strengthen consumer protection, violence against children and the elderly, and graffiti, and terrorism . . .

  • Assembly Bill 375 tightens the regulation of mortgage brokers to protect investors and the public.
  • Assembly Bill 14 allows law enforcement to better prevent costly and unsightly graffiti by giving the police more authority and also increases the penalties for graffiti.
  • Assembly Bill 58 expands the first degree murder qualifications to include murder committed in the perpetration or attempted perpetration of abuse of an older person or vulnerable person.
  • Assembly Bill 137 increases the penalty for engaging in acts of terrorism and creates a new crime of delivering a "hoax substance,” defined as any item that a reasonable person would believe is a weapon of mass destruction, biological agent, radioactive agent or other lethal agent.
  • Assembly Bill 313 requires the Department of Education to establish a procedure for the notification, tracking, and monitoring of the status of criminals cases involving licensed teachers.
  • Assembly Bill 344 makes it a Class E felony to intentionally or knowingly make a false or misleading statement for the purpose of activating the Statewide Alert System for the Safe Return of Abducted Children (the Amber Alert system).

I’m already working with our leadership team to develop new or enhanced legislation to meet the ever-changing needs of our fast growing state. With your support, I’ll be able to continue working for common-sense solutions.

Thanks for your interest. Please drop me an email by clicking here if you have any ideas or comments.

Sincerely,

John Oceguera
Assemblyman, District 16
